Glossary

Barred Feathers which are marked with alternating light and dark bands.

Blind A constructed "place covered and surrounded with natural grasses and branches in which the hunter hides in or near to see or shoot game.

Brace Two birds.

Clutch of Eggs The name given to a single laying of the usual amount at one nesting period.

Commercial Shooting Preserve A preserve privately owned that is stocked with birds or animals for the sole purpose of shooting them. A certain price is charged for each bird killed.

Covey   A group of birds feeding or flying in a small tight group.

Decoy A wooden, plastic or rubber imitation of the real bird, used to attract the flying birds into the blind.

Flocking    Birds that tend to fly together in a group.

Flushing Raising from their ground position to that of flying, by coming near with dog, or scared up from the ground by man.

Fowl    A general term used to describe ducks and chickens.

Game Poachers Those people who shoot too many birds over the legal limit or shoot birds out of season or shoot on private property.

Gregarious    The habit of living, feeding together in a group.

Haunts    Favored locations for feeding, resting, nesting and living.

Hybrid A cross of bloodlines or species in breeding to produce a variant of the species.

Lead (heed) The amount of sighting distance given by the gunner in order for the shot to intercept the bird in flight.

Leg Banding The placing of a metal or plastic band on the leg for later identification when bird is checked or shot. The purpose is to discover its flight pattern from area to area.

Migratory A bird that migrates, or travels in season from north to south or from south to north, or travels any regular pattern for food or nesting.

Naturalist    One who studies nature and the living creatures.

Pinnated Feathers which are thin down at the tips to where the stem is almost bare of fibers.

Pointing Dog The dog that points the game with its nose so the hunter can locate it.

Predators Those animals or birds which feed on the flesh of other creatures.

Propogation    The breeding of animals and birds to produce young.

Ruffs    Feathered patches at the shoulder of the bird.

Sanctuary That place designated by man to be set aside for the use of the birds. Protection is offered from hunting and molesting.

Species The scientific name given to an established kind of animal or bird.

Stalk    To sneak up or approach without the animal knowing it.

Stocked A bird or animal raised in captivity and released in the wild.
